How We Test
Every product we recommend has been tested with real pets in real homes. We maintain a volunteer network of 20+ pet families across the US who put products through months of daily use.
Scoring Criteria
Every product receives a score from 0 to 10 based on weighted criteria. Here is exactly how we calculate it.
Quality & Safety
We analyze ingredients (food), inspect materials (toys/gear), and check for recalls or safety concerns. All pet food reviews include veterinarian-reviewed ingredient analysis.
Pet Acceptance
We test with multiple pets across breeds and ages. Palatability, engagement, and long-term use are tracked over 30+ days. Picky eaters get their own panel.
Value
We calculate cost-per-day for food, cost-per-use for gear, and compare coverage vs premium for insurance. Subscription discounts and bulk pricing are factored in.
Convenience
We evaluate ordering experience, delivery reliability, packaging quality, and return policies. For tech products, app quality and setup ease are tested.
Tools & Equipment
The tools we use to produce consistent, reproducible results.
- Volunteer pet family testing network (20+ households)
- Veterinary nutritionist ingredient review panel
- 30-day palatability and engagement tracking
- Durability testing for toys and accessories
- Insurance claim simulation for coverage testing
Independence Pledge
- No sponsored rankings. Our scores are never influenced by advertising or affiliate relationships.
- We buy everything ourselves. Products are purchased at retail price with our own funds. No vendor-supplied review units.
- Affiliate transparency. We earn commissions from some links. This funds our testing but never affects our scores. Full disclosure.
- Corrections policy. If we get something wrong, we update the article with a visible correction notice and date.
Update Cadence
Food reviews are updated when formulations change. Product reviews are refreshed every 6 months. Insurance comparisons are updated annually.
Every article shows its publish date and last update date. If a review is more than 6 months old without an update, we flag it as potentially outdated.
